Extensive documentation of the use of essential oils is seen throughout history. In 2005 National Geographic published an article documenting a find in Egypt of surgical tools and sacred oil vials dating back 5,000 years. The Bible also mentions oils hundreds of times, most notably the gifts of frankincense and myrrh given to Jesus at his birth.
Oils, herbs, solvents, spices and tinctures were highly valued for their physical, spiritual and emotional healing properties. Our ancestors believed in the connection of mind, body and spirit, a belief which is becoming accepted again today. Throughout history natural plant material was being used to heal, however, the problem of transporting and preserving was nearly impossible. In 1806 a German chemist isolated the first active alkaloid of a natural drug, morphine. Isolation of Morphine from a poppy created the method of preservation. Drugs were originally made from plants but through time and science these “chemical cocktails” have become synthetic. In many instances, our bodies build resistance to these synthetic drugs or react with negative side effects. We are again looking towards nature for ways to heal.
WILL ANY AROMA WORK?
Quality essential oils are extracted from natural sources including leaves, stems, flowers, bark, grass, resins, rinds or seeds of plants. These essential oils are the basis for aromatherapy. Grown around the world, under a wide range of conditions and generally harvested in the field these natural essential oils contain chemical properties that resonate with the human body. Usually chemically manufactured aromatics do not have this effect and may actually cause adverse reactions. Quality essential oils are central to the aromatherapy products and protocol developed by Scents-ible Solutions® .
There are several ways that essential oils can enter the human body. When molecules from essential oils enter the air they become odorous. As an odor is inhaled it impinges on the olfactory organ which contains some 20 million nerve endings. The odor is then transmuted into a nerve message which is amplified by the olfactory bulb and then passes along the olfactory tract and enters the limbic system. The limbic system is the center for memory, emotion, creativity, hunger and happiness. It is scientifically proven that the sense of smell has a strong link to memory and emotion. The essential oil molecules have the same effect on the brain even if the individual no longer is able to smell or recognize aroma. Essential oil molecules can also enter the body through the lungs. Here they are absorbed into the circulatory system and expelled by the urinary tract.
